Featuring military special ops bone conduction technology, AfterShokz Mobile headphones sit comfortably in front of the ear, keeping your ears open, while delivering stereophonic sound through the listener’s cheekbones to the inner ear, permitting users to hear ambient noises such as oncoming traffic, car horns, ambulances or other warning noises.

If a call comes in while listening to music, AfterShokz technology automatically interrupts and activates the in-line mic, making active mobile communications easier, safer, and more comfortable than ever.

AfterShokz Sportz M2 open ear sport headphones are lightweight, sweat and water resistant, and feature an on/off switch, volume control, an in-line mic, a micro USB charging port, and a 3.5mm gold plated standard connector that fits most smart phones, iPhones, iPods, iPads, and MP3 players, a water repellent storage tote, and a lifetime warranty.

AfterShokz Sportz M2 open ear sport headphones are the safest, most comfortable way to keep connected on the planet.

Review
As a slave to my audio feedback when running and also enjoying listening to Podcasts and music on those long runs I have gone through several sets of ear phones struggling to find some that will stay in my ears.

I run with a friend on a regular basis and feel rude to be ‘plugged in’ when we run together but still want feedback so having the phone on loud and struggling to listen has become the norm.

My first impressions of the M2 is of the sleek storage box that can be thrown into a bag and has everything that you need within it.  The unit itself feels very robust but I like the fact I have somewhere to store them when they are not in use.  My initial concerns over the weight of the mic unit were unfounded and I had concerns over the fit and ‘bounce’ of the unit as it was not going to be sat in my ears.  As with the mic unit these were truly unfounded!

The sounds pads fit snugly on the side of my face just in front of my ears and never move/slip and the back band sits nicely in the nape of the neck.  I was unsure how good the sound quality of volume would be like but was blown away by both.  The sound is very clear and with the added settings on the mic unit very easy to navigate and change.  The unit is completely compatible with the iphone allowing the use of siri to control the unit also.  I cannot notice the difference of the M2 and other in ear headphones.

The major selling point of the M2 is the fact that it leaves your ears completely free to hear the noises around you.  This is a true selling point as if like me, you’re a road runner to get in your miles the ability to hear cars, horns, bikes and other dangers around you really is a true benefit.  I loved the fact that on my early morning runs I can now hear bird song over the music and feedback.  The technology is born from military communications, so if you’re a gear geek like me this is pretty cool too!

I have not tested them on race day yet but it will be interesting to see if you will be able to wear them as they do not prevent you hearing others and safety instructions.  I personally can’t see this being a problem off to those that sit in your ear that are banned at many races.  This will be a major benefit for those feedback junkies like me.

Charging is easy with the cables in the pack and I did not have to charge them until after over 6hrs of use the first time.

Sadly these have become my earphones of choice and I now get strange looks from people in the supermarket as I use Siri and the mic to call my wife to check if we need more cereal!  I have also started to use them on long drives as my hands free!

It would be worth look at as an upgrade to your current ones, they are available from several running outlets to ‘have a go at’ (Runners Need for one) but are much cheaper if you go direct to aftershokz.

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Mic and controls
  • Out of ear – can still hear whats going on around you
  • Long battery
  • Comfortable
  • Sleek look
  • Storage case

Cons:

  • Being stopped by others interested in your earphones!
