Which Charity are you supporting and why?

I’m supporting Joni’s Army.

Joni-Mai was the daughter of my friends, she was 9 when she passed away, having been suffering from a rare form of cancer – Ewings Scarcoma – since she was 4. Joni’s Army support families of sick children and try to make life easier for them and help them get treatment that falls outside the NHS umbrella. Joni-Mai is an inspiration to me, all through her battle with cancer she was bright and cheerful, and never let it beat her mentally. She endured countless rounds of chemo and radiotherapy.

What is your challenge? I’m running 12 marathons or ultras in 12 months from September 2016 – September 2017. I’ve run 5 to date – weruntheyrunirun 6 hr race in September, Chelmsford marathon in October, A20 path and downs marathon in November, Winchelsea Chase 6hr race & Peddars way in Jan. I’m trying to finalise the rest of the races but they include Spitfire Scramble, Ouse Valley Way & Cakeathon

Why did you choose this? I usually do one race a year in support of Joni’s Army, I was 40 in September and it seemed appropriate to step it up to raise more cash for a fantastic charity, close to my heart. Call it a poor mans midlife crisis 🙂 keeps me out the house and out of trouble.

Which Charity are you supporting and why?

I am trying my best to raise both awareness of and funds for the Stroke Association.

Three members of my family and a close family friend have suffered strokes.
Shortly after retiring, my Great-Uncle suffered a stroke. He spent the next
7 years in a nursing home unable to walk or communicate prior to his death in 2004.

In 2014, my father in law, again in the early days of his retirement suffered a severe stroke leaving him hospitalised for several months initially unable to walk and without the use of his left arm. He has since returned home and after a period of time has managed to start driving again which is a great achievement.

In late 2014 my Nan suffered a massive stroke leaving her in a coma which sadly she never came out of and passed away 2 weeks later.

As recently as last week (mid Feb 17) a close family friend suffered a stroke and is still currently in hospital.

So much more needs to be done to highlight the amazing work that the Stroke Association is doing to raise awareness of strokes, from prevention through to recovery and support. I want to try and raise as much money as possible to ensure that this continues.

What is your challenge?

Starting with 5K runs in November and December, my wife and I will be running in 12 events over the next 12 months. With 2 10ks also already completed (in Jan/ Feb) the race distances will increase to half marathons with the pinnacle of the challenge being the Dublin Marathon in October 2017.

We we are hoping to generate a lot of interest amongst the Medal Hunters out there by organising a Virtual 5K run.

This run can be completed at home or work on the roads or in the gym. it can be walked or run and will need to be completed between 3rd – 17th July. Each participant pays a fee to enter and will receive a custom made medal once they supply proof that they have completed the distance in one session.

Why did you choose this?

The Virtual run we see as a great way to raise awareness of Stroke while taking the opportunity to try and encourage people to get out there and try running as, taking part in our own personal challenge, we have definitely caught the running bug again after a few years of no training at all.
