What to do if you don’t get into the London Marathon
Runners who applied for a ballot place in the Virgin London Marathon are beginning to find out if they were successful. But what should runners do if they don’t get a spot?
The ABP Southampton Marathon takes place exactly one week after London, giving runners an alternative event to enter if they don’t get a spot.
The ABP Southampton Marathon takes place on Sunday May 5, giving runners the added bonus of a day off afterwards as it’s a bank holiday weekend.
It usually costs £49.99 to enter although organisers are offering to match London’s price of £39 over the next two weeks for runners who were unsuccessful in the London ballot. To redeem the ‘commiseration’ entry offer use the code ‘LONDON’ when entering online at HERE before October 28, 2018.
The event also features a half marathon and 10k distance on the same day.
Race director Chris Rees said: “The Virgin London Marathon is a brilliant event so we understand those who don’t get a ballot might be disappointed. The good news is our event is exactly a week later so their training needn’t go to waste. The ABP Southampton Marathon is gaining a reputation as one of the friendliest events in the running calendar so entrants can be sure of huge cheers from up to 30,000 spectators on the day.
“What’s more, Southampton is an exceptionally well-connected city so it’ll be simple for runners to get to us on the day.”
Chris adds that he’s throwing down the gauntlet for runners to take part in both events: “For those who were lucky enough to get a ballot we want to see who has the mettle to take on two marathons in two weeks. It would certainly be a challenge! There are also shorter distances if they’d prefer to run a half or 10k as a ‘cool down’.”
