Olympic triathlon gold medallist Alex Yee will be taking on a new epic sporting challenge in 2025 – the TCS London Marathon.
The 26-year-old Brit, who was nominated for last night’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for his incredible Olympic victory in Paris this summer, is now putting extra focus on his running as he prepares for his 26.2-mile debut at the 2025 TCS London Marathon on Sunday 27 April.
Yee, who has won four Olympic Games medals for triathlon, is no stranger to competing in elite athletics, after racing for Great Britain on both the track and cross-country.
But the TCS London Marathon will be his most high-profile athletics race to date and the born-and-bred Londoner cannot wait to experience an event that has always been high on his to-do list.
Yee, who raced the Mini London Marathon five times during his junior career, said: “Committing to the TCS London Marathon for me was a no-brainer. It is an event that has given me so many memories. London Marathon day has been such a big part of my life growing up. I remember racing the Mini London Marathon multiple times as a young athlete and it was one of my biggest and most exciting races of the year. Taking part in a full marathon has always been an itch I’ve wanted to scratch and there isn’t any another place than London that I would want to start that journey.
“I will be focusing my training over the coming months on the marathon and am looking forward to seeing what I can do over the 26.2 miles. I am sure that once again the TCS London Marathon will include the best marathon runners from around the world and across the UK and I’m just looking forward to seeing how I fare in their company.”
Yee won the individual Olympic gold medal at last summer’s Paris Games in memorable fashion, closing a 12-second gap on Hayden Wilde of New Zealand in the final 3K to take a famous victory. It meant he went one better than the Tokyo Olympic Games where he finished with the silver medal. He was part of the gold medal-winning Great Britain triathlon team in Tokyo and the bronze medal-winning team in Paris.
Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, said: “Alex Yee is one of the greatest all-round athletes this country has produced and his win at the Paris Olympic Games will go down as one of the most thrilling moments in British sporting history. We are proud that the Mini London Marathon was part of his journey to the top of world sport and we’re thrilled to welcome him back to take part in the TCS London Marathon for the historic 45th edition of the event. It will be fascinating to see how the reigning Olympic triathlon champion will perform against the greatest marathon runners from across the world and the UK on his home roads. I can’t wait to find out on Sunday 27 April.”
The 2025 TCS London Marathon is the 45th edition of the world’s greatest marathon and takes place on Sunday 27 April.
The full elite fields for the TCS London Marathon will be announced in the new year.
