Organisers of the annual Hackney Moves festival are expanding their commitment to providing opportunities for the local community.
The Hackney Academy returns following its debut success for last year’s Hackney Half Marathon, which saw thirty local runners train together for twelve weeks in the lead up to the race.
This year, the programme is expanding to facilitate fifty participants with applications to join the initiative open until Wednesday 14 January. The Hackney Academy provides free running sessions to Hackney locals who are beginners or returning after a break due to injury, health or personal challenges.
Participants will receive expert coaching, kit and a free entry in the sold out 2026 Hackney Half Marathon on Sunday 17 May. Delivered over twelve sessions, the Hackney Academy aims to build confidence, friendships and race-day readiness.
To be eligible to apply you must live in Hackney or a nearby borough, 18 years or older, be new to running or returning from a break, and able to attend at least ten of the twelve weekly sessions.

The Hackney Academy debuted ahead of the 2025 Hackney Half and saw thirty runners take part, complete the 13-mile challenge to round off the initiative. Motiv Sports, who organise the Hackney Half, created the initiative as part of its wider community-focused programme which aims to increase local participation.
As well as hosting the half marathon, Hackney Moves encompasses a full weekend festival celebrating running, fitness and the Hackney area. More than 25,000 raced last year with a total of 60,000 descending upon Hackney Marshes across the weekend.
