The three British Athletics European Indoor Selection Trials events are taking place at Lee Valley, Loughborough and Manchester this weekend.

In the north-west, the two-day event will feature several highly anticipated middle-distance races, the 400m and the combined events.

The men’s 800m contest will be one of the highlights of the meeting with the new British indoor record holder Elliot Giles (Jon Bigg; Birchfield) on the start list. Giles recorded a time of 1:43.63 in Torun on Wednesday evening to improve Seb Coe’s 38-year-old record. Guy Learmonth (Justin Rinaldi; Lasswade), who has also run an indoor PB this season, will also line-up for the contest.

Andrew Butchart (Central) will double up in the 1500m and 3000m over the weekend, while Verity Ockenden (Tony Houchin; Swansea) returns to Manchester for the women’s 3000m following her indoor PB – 8:51.63 – over the distance last week.

Zoey Clark (Eddie McKenna; Thames Valley) and Jessie Knight (Marina Armstrong; Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) head the entries for the women’s 400m, while Jodie Williams (Herts Phoenix) continues her first indoor season in 12 years, over the two-lap distance.

The Lee Valley Athletics Centre will play host to eight events on Saturday 20 February, including the men’s and women’s 60m, men’s 60m hurdles, long jump, and triple jump.

Fresh from clocking 6.61 in Loughborough last weekend, Andrew Robertson (Sam Robertson; Sale Harrier Manchester) leads the 2021 UK standings in the men’s 60m and will take on Oliver Bromby (Marvin Rowe; Southampton) who also ran inside the European Indoor qualifying standard recently.

In the field, world finalist Abigail Irozuru (self-coached; Sale Harriers Manchester) and 2016 European silver medallist Jazmin Sawyers (City of Stoke) will go head-to-head in the women’s long jump, with 2017 World Para Athletics T38 champion Olivia Breen (Aston Moore; City of Portsmouth) also in the line-up.

Loughborough will play host to the six field events on Sunday 21 February with Morgan Lake (Eldon Lake; Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) and Sophie McKinna (Mike Winch) among the entries.

McKinna started her season in PB form in Karlsruhe at the first World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting back in January – the Great Yarmouth athlete throwing 18.46 metres, an indoor best. Sabrina Fortune (Ian Robinson; Deeside), the reigning World Para Athletics F20 shot put champion, will also enter the throwing circle for the first time this year.

Lake opened her season at the National Performance Institute last weekend, clearing 1.88m in the high jump, whilst 2019 WPA T64 High Jump champion Jonathan Broom-Edwards (Graham Ravenscroft; Newham & Essex Beagles) goes in the men’s equivalent having cleared 2.12m last weekend, his best since 2017.
