Highlights from our conversation with Fran

Getting into running the first time round

Fran’s running journey began about 15 years ago with her dad, a triathlete and triathlon coach. Starting with small 5K races, she eventually moved up to 10Ks and half marathons, finding a passion for the sport along the way. Her first marathon, the one-off Bristol to Bath Marathon in 2015, was an unforgettable experience. The scenic route and the support of her dad made it a milestone in her journey.

Embracing the running community

Returning to running after a nine year break, Fran shares how she missed the community and confidence that running once gave her, sparking a desire to return to the sport. Fran found a home with the Northampton Road Runners, joining a “Fast Track to 5K” programme that rebuilt her base. From pub runs to social park sessions, the club’s camaraderie and structured programs have been instrumental in her comeback. Parkrun Saturdays have also become a highlight, offering a way to meet new people and break the monotony of solo training.

Finding the motivation to run another marathon

After joining the Northampton Road Runners, Fran found a support network that reignited her marathon ambitions. After missing out on the London Marathon, Paris stood out as a unique alternative. Fran shares how excited she is to see Paris as both a runner and a tourist, with friends planning to join her for a memorable weekend in the City of Light. She’s excited to run it for the mental health charity Shout. Fran is aiming to finish under five hours while enjoying the experience.

How training has been different this time around

Fran has embraced a fresh, gradual approach to training. She’s been incorporating interval and hill training to build endurance and speed using the Runna app, which helps pace her runs and ensure recovery days are well-managed. Rediscovering the foundations—like warming up, stretching, and balanced nutrition—has made the experience enjoyable and sustainable. As for the future, she’s curious about ultramarathons, with her club’s tales of endurance races tempting her. Though she’s focused on Paris for now, the idea of tackling a night race or an ultra-distance challenge is starting to grow on her.

Advice for runners taking on their first marathon

Fran stresses the importance of pacing and listening to your body. She advises newcomers to keep training flexible and to embrace the support of a community. A run-walk strategy is perfectly valid, and she’s a strong believer in finding joy in the process, not just the finish line. And if possible, having a supportive family member or friend as a mentor can be invaluable.
