The Rase was among the first models with which Joma began developing its trail running range. Designed for racing, the early editions featured a construction focused on stability and protection.
Nearly a decade later, the Rase remains part of the collection, but has evolved to meet the current needs of trail runners. The new version retains recognisable elements from the first generations while reworking its design to deliver a lighter, more versatile response.
Joma has continued to refine and adapt every detail to deliver increasingly effective performance. Reduced weight, better distribution of protection, cushioning tailored to each phase of the stride and an optimised response on the terrain are some of the improvements revealed by comparing the earliest versions with the current model.
Miguel Heras chose this new generation of Rase for his return to racing at Ultra Pirineu 2026: “With the Rase, I don’t have to think about my feet. It’s comfortable, stable and lightweight, which is exactly what I need from a shoe after hours in the mountains,” he says. The trail running legend finished eighth over the alternative course of approximately 60 kilometres, in an edition affected by the risk of severe storms. Heras brings a perspective grounded in real use: long hours on the terrain, changes of pace and a stride that also evolves as fatigue sets in.
Almost a decade of technical evolution
In a discipline where new technologies and concepts emerge every season, remaining relevant for almost a decade also demonstrates the staying power of the product. The Rase retains a clear proposition: providing the balance needed for long training runs and ultra-distance races.
Breathable mesh has been part of the Rase since its earliest versions. The current model uses a lighter, more technical mesh, supported by reinforcements placed in the areas most exposed to abrasion and friction. This distribution lightens the overall construction while maintaining the necessary protection where the shoe comes under the greatest strain.
The most significant transformation is found in the midsole. While the first Rase models used a single piece of phylon and incorporated a stabilising plate in the midfoot, the current version divides the midsole into two areas with different functions. Reactive Ball is positioned in the rear to absorb impact and quickly recover its shape, helping to generate propulsion. In the forefoot, phylon provides stability and contributes to a smoother transition. This evolution broadens the model’s field of use, from long training runs to ultra-distance races.
The Durability rubber outsole provides a link between the two generations. Its resistance to wear remains one of the defining features of the Rase, while the lug structure has evolved to optimise grip and respond across different surfaces. The result is a more versatile shoe, ready to support runners as the terrain or conditions change.
Nearly a decade after its first kilometres, the Rase retains what still works, yet continues to move forward in the mountains alongside one of Spain’s most experienced trail runners.
