The Experience Oman IRONMAN Pro Series heads to Sweden for the first time on 15 August, with IRONMAN Kalmar set to play a pivotal role in the 2026 season.
As the 13th stop of the Pro Series, Kalmar represents the final opportunity for professional athletes to secure qualification for the 2026 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, with the last three Kona slots per gender and 5,000 Pro Series points up for grabs.
Philipp returns as Christensen defends title
The women’s race features an impressive line-up led by defending Kalmar champion Katrine Christensen (DEN), who returns after claiming victory here last year in 8:27:49.
Christensen has enjoyed an outstanding 2026 campaign, including podium finishes at IRONMAN Hamburg, IRONMAN South Africa and IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore, but she’ll face one of the toughest tests in long-distance triathlon.
Standing in her way is 2024 IRONMAN World Champion Laura Philipp (GER), who arrives looking to build momentum ahead of Kona. The pair last met at IRONMAN Hamburg, where Christensen’s strong bike leg gave her an early advantage before Philipp surged through the marathon to finish ahead.
Home hopes rest with Sara Svensk, who has already shown strong form this season with a sixth-place finish at IRONMAN Texas and a top-10 finish at last year’s World Championship in Kona.
The American challenge comes from Jackie Hering, winner of IRONMAN 70.3 Dallas-Little Elm earlier this year, alongside Rachel Zilinskas, who claimed third at IRONMAN Lake Placid and is expected to be among the first out of the water.
Several athletes, including Leonie Konczalla (GER), Rebecca Clarke (NZL), Jeanne Collonge (FRA) and Jenny Jendryschik (GER), are still chasing Kona qualification, adding even more significance to Saturday’s race.
Strong men’s field promises aggressive racing
The men’s race is equally competitive, with more than 70 professionals on the start line.
Americans Matthew Marquardt and Trevor Foley head the field after both raced at IRONMAN Lake Placid, while Germany’s Jonas Schomburg is expected to animate the race from the front thanks to his aggressive swim and bike strengths.
French Olympian Pierre Le Corre also starts as one of the favourites after finishing runner-up on his full-distance IRONMAN debut in New Zealand earlier this season.
If the early leaders fail to establish a decisive gap, athletes including Matt Hanson (USA) and Antonio Benito Lopez (ESP) could become major contenders during the marathon thanks to their renowned run strength.
Qualification for Kona is also on the line for Finn Große-Freese (GER), Jonas Hoffmann (GER) and Henrik Goesch (FIN), while Swedish fans will be cheering on Jesper Svensson, who claimed three IRONMAN top-10 finishes last season.
British interest
There is British representation in the professional men’s race, with Will Grace, Thomas Bishop and Samuel Wyatt-Haines all confirmed on the start list.
How to watch
IRONMAN Kalmar takes place on Saturday 15 August and will be streamed live and free via the IRONMAN YouTube channel and IRONMAN Pro Series platforms, with the race expected to have a major impact on both the Pro Series standings and the final Kona qualification picture.
