Over 1,000 participants took to the trails of the Surrey Hills this weekend as the North Downs 50 Ultra Challenge returned to Guildford, combining personal achievement, fundraising, record breaking performances and community spirit across one of the region’s most scenic endurance events.

Participants walked, jogged and ran distances of 10km, 25km and the full 50km route along sections of the North Downs Way, passing through rolling countryside, ancient woodland and some of Surrey’s most iconic landscapes.

The Challenge attracted people of all ages and abilities, with many taking on their first endurance event while others returned as seasoned Challengers. Designed to be accessible rather than purely competitive, the event encouraged participants to tackle the route at their own pace, supported by rest stops, hot food, welfare teams and hundreds of fellow Challengers along the way.

As well as providing a memorable day out in the Surrey countryside, the event delivered a major boost for good causes, with participants raising over £150,000 for charities and community organisations.

Among the fastest finishers over the full 50km distance, Joe Turner crossed the line first in a course-record time of 3:24:21, while Katherine Wood was the first female finisher, completing the course in 4:06:17, smashing the female record.

The event also welcomed two members of what organisers describe as ‘Ultra Challenge Royalty’.

Peter Florence completed his 97th Ultra Challenge event, continuing a remarkable run of endurance achievements across the series and moving ever closer to the milestone of 100 Challenges.

Meanwhile, Roger Cross added another finish to an extraordinary Ultra Challenge record. Roger has now completed more than 5,200km across Ultra Challenge events, having taken part in 63 challenges, almost exclusively choosing the longest distances available.

The North Downs 50 is part of the Ultra Challenge Series, which encourages people of all fitness levels to get active, explore the outdoors and achieve goals they may never have thought possible.
