First Impressions

Straight out of the box, the Altra Experience Wild 3+ immediately stood out with its bright pink colourway and aggressive-looking lugs. The shoe felt light in hand, hinting at nimble performance on the trail. The overall design feels purposeful: roomy yet structured, with a focus on comfort and protection.

Fit

Altra stays true to its foot-shaped philosophy, allowing your toes to move naturally rather than being cramped into a narrow toe box. The Experience Wild 3+ fits true to size with that signature roomy forefoot, which really comes into its own on longer runs.

Heel hold is generally good, although on steeper descents I did notice some forward movement, even when using a heel-lock lacing technique.

Ride & Cushioning

The Altra EGO™ P35 midsole is lightweight and delivers a comfortable, cushioned ride without feeling overly soft. There’s a good balance here — enough protection for longer efforts while still maintaining some ground feel.

Altra also highlights a rocker shape designed to promote a smooth, efficient toe-off. In practice, this wasn’t something I particularly noticed, but the ride did feel natural, light, and easy from the first run.

Grip & Terrain

With a Vibram® Megagrip outsole, these shoes are built for confidence across a wide range of conditions. I tested them on mud, wet rock, grass, gravel, and short tarmac sections between trails.

Grip is excellent, particularly in wet and technical conditions. I felt confident on slippery surfaces — even running canicross-style with a dog pulling on descents. I also ran through streams and deep puddles; the shoes didn’t hold onto water and continued to perform well on slick rock.

Stability & Protection

The Experience Wild 3+ feels stable on uneven terrain, with a protective toe bumper that does a great job of shielding against rocks and roots. It’s a shoe you can trust when the trail gets more technical.

Durability

After several hours across mixed terrain, there are no early signs of wear on either the outsole or upper — a promising start in terms of durability.

Who They’re For

Trail runners looking for a comfortable, cushioned shoe with reliable all-terrain grip. They’ll particularly suit those tackling longer runs or mixed terrain, where comfort and foot freedom become increasingly important.

Pros

Extremely comfortable, especially over longer distances

Excellent grip on wet, muddy, and rocky terrain

Flat laces stay secure and don’t come undone

Protective toe bumper adds confidence on technical trails

Cons

Slight heel movement on descents (potentially solved by sizing down half a size)

Be aware

If you’re used to running in higher drop shoes, the 4mm drop may take some getting used to. Lower drop shoes encourage a more natural foot position, but it’s worth easing in gradually to avoid overloading calves and Achilles.
