In a bold evolution of the world-renowned Dragon’s Back Race®, the organisers have announced two new races for 2026 – Dragon’s Fire and Dragon’s Tail – each delivering a high-octane two-day mountain adventure through some of Wales’ most dramatic and iconic terrain.

Set against the same legendary backdrop as the full six-day Dragon’s Back Race® taking place 7th – 12th September 2026, these new routes invite more runners to experience the magic, grit, and camaraderie of this unforgettable journey, in a shorter, more accessible format.

“I’m incredibly excited to introduce Dragon’s Fire and Dragon’s Tail,” said event director Shane Ohly.

“These two new races open the door for more runners to experience the magic of the Dragon’s Back Race in a more accessible and achievable way.”

Dragon’s Fire | 7–8 September 2026

110km | 7300m+ ascent

Dragon’s Fire is a two-day mountain epic that starts at the iconic Conwy Castle, covering the toughest and most technical stages of the full Dragon’s Back Race including the Carneddau, Glyderau, Snowdon massif and the Rhinogs. It’s an intense introduction to the Dragon’s spirit, with two nights at the event’s legendary overnight camps.

“These aren’t watered-down versions of the main event; they are must-do mountain running challenges,” said Ohly.

“Completing either is a significant achievement, and one any runner should be proud of.”

Dragon’s Tail | 11–12 September 2026

137km | 4500m+ ascent

Dragon’s Tail offers a spectacular two-day finale, beginning on Day 5 of the full race and capturing its emotional climax. Runners will traverse the wild beauty of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) widely hailed as the best single day of the course, before a flat-out ultra finish into the heart of Cardiff and a grandstand reception at Cardiff Castle.

“I also hope these races serve as a stepping stone for aspiring Dragons,” said Ohly.

“Many runners don’t realise what they’re truly capable of — and I hope these new races will ignite that sense of belief and adventure.”

Both Dragon’s Fire and Dragon’s Tail offer full race support, overnight camps, and unforgettable start or finish lines at Conwy and Cardiff Castles. Whether you’re chasing the full six-day Dragon or tackling Fire or Tail, the experience promises to be nothing short of extraordinary. This is where legends are forged.

Entries for the Dragon’s Back Race 2026, including Dragon’s Fire and Dragon’s Tail, will open at www.dragonsbackrace.com on Wednesday 31st July 2025 at 10am.
